Safety with Children

• Teach safety strategies to your children.

• Inform your children’s school, day care, etc., about who has permission to pick up your children.

• Teach your children how to find a phone in a safe place and call 911.

• Teach your children how to place a collect call to you in the event that your partner takes the children.

• Teach children who to call for help.

• Encourage children to stay out of fights or arguments.

• Avoid getting trapped in a room.

• Escape to a safe place.

• Tell them “it’s not your fault”.

• Minimize children’s exposure to fighting.

• Refrain from discussing your abuser with children.

• Obtain counseling for children

• Develop a plan for how/ when you can take the children with you safely. NOTE: There are times when taking your children with you may put all of your lives in danger. You need to be able to protect yourself in order to protect your children.
