Safety on the Job and in Public

• Decide who at work you will inform of your situation. This should include the building or office security. Provide a picture of your batterer if possible.

• Consider whether to inform your boss.

• Consider carefully who you will tell about being a victim of domestic violence and that you may be a continued risk.

• Consider informing your employer about a safety person to call in case of absence.

• Arrange to have an answering machine, caller ID or a trusted friend screen your calls.

• Devise a safety plan for when you leave work.

• Have someone escort you to your car, bus or train and wait with you until you are safely on your way.

• Park close to entrances/ exits.

• Use a variety of routes to go home.

• Look at alternative work hours or locations.

• Think about what you would do if something happened while going home.

• Stay aware of your surroundings and if you are being followed.

• Use different stores and shopping malls to conduct business or shop at different times than you did when living with your abuser.

• If you have to meet your partner, meet in a public place (shopping mall, coffee shop, restaurant, or local Police Department).

• Vary driving routes and times when you complete errands.

• Do not frequent areas visited by abuser.
