Safety During an Explosive Incident
If an argument seems unavoidable

• Never tell your abuser that you are planning to leave them, especially during an argument. Batterers often strike back when they believe that a victim is leaving a relationship.

• Trust your judgment and intuition.

• When you expect that you are going to have an argument, try to move to a space that is lowest risk.

• Try to stay in an area where you have access to an exit.

• Identify rooms with an exit and know your escape routes.

• Stay away from the bathroom, kitchen or where weapons might be available.

• Try to keep as much distance between you and your abuser as possible.

• Consider giving your partner what he/she wants to calm him/her down.

• Devise a “code word” to use with family and friends when you need the police.

• Always remember – You don’t deserve to be hit or threatened.
