Safety after Leaving the Relationship

• Never tell your abuser where you live.

• Change your phone number.

• Save and document all contacts, messages, injuries from other incidents.

• Avoid staying alone.

• Plan how to get away if confronted by an abusive partner.

• Keep a record of all emails, calls texts, letters, stalking behaviors, etc. of your abuser.

• Save threatening or intimidating emails or calls.


Safety with a Protective Order

• Keep your protective order with you at all times. Give a copy to a family member, friend or neighbor.

• Inform your employer, family, friends, neighbors, children’s school and health care provider that you have a protective order in effect.

• If your partner violates the protection order, call the police and report the violation, call your advocate and/or advise the court of the violation.

• Think of alternative ways to keep safe if the police do not respond right away.
